Wayne focusing mind and body on title challenge

Wayne Rooney has vowed to do everything he can to help Manchester United upset the Premier League football odds and win the title this season.

The English striker has recently been celebrating the birth of his first child, named Kai Wayne, but is not looking for his new off-the-field responsibilities to affect his performances for the Old Trafford faithful.

Manchester United currently sit in third place in the Premier League, five points behind title front-runners Chelsea following the West London side's 1-0 victory over the Red Devils in the last round of league games.

The team will be looking to put their Premier League title ambitions back on track this coming weekend when they host Everton at Old Trafford and Rooney is not considering asking for a rest from that game.

Rooney admits that United have to “try even harder” following the defeat to their title rivals but he is not looking to preserve energy and will give everything he has to help his side.

"I am sure there will be games when I will have the chance to be rested,” said the English striker.

"I would prefer to play but if the manager decides to rest me, it is his decision."

One player who also aspires to do more to help United’s title charge is goalkeeper Ben Foster.

The England stopper has admitted it is hard to knock Edwin van der Sar out of the number one jersey and he is feeling disheartened with life currently at Old Trafford, although he is not planning on leaving the reigning Premier League champions.

Owen focused on United success

Manchester United’s bid for glory both domestically and in Europe could hinge on Michael Owen getting his mind focused on the job in hand.

The former Liverpool, Real Madrid and Newcastle striker has revealed that he is concentrating on his games coming up for United rather than losing any sleep over the ongoing debate as to whether he should be included in Fabio Capello’s World Cup squad.

Owen has won 89 caps to date for his country and scored 40 goals, which sees him sat fourth in the top England goalscorers list, only nine behind record holder and Old Trafford legend Bobby Charlton.

Whether or not Owen should still play for his country has been a continued point of debate for the media and football fans ever since the Italian took over as England coach. However, the player himself is refusing to get involved in the issue.

He has stated that he prefers to think about his current role at Old Trafford and the job he needs to do for the Red Devils to help fire them to both Premier League and Champions League glory.

“I genuinely go to bed thinking that I have got to play well the next day and win games for United. I don't think if I score or play well that I might get picked for England,” said Owen.

"First things first and the rest will take care of itself."

Manchester United have a crunch game in the next round of Premier League matches as they travel to Stamford Bridge to take on leaders Chelsea.

They currently sit two points behind their West London rivals and can replace Chelsea at the top of the table if they upset the Premier League odds and are victorious on Sunday afternoon.
