Ferguson sees two-way title battle

Sir Alex Ferguson has identified Chelsea as the real danger to the chances of Manchester United recording a fourth straight Premier League title.

United currently sit two points behind their West London rivals after an impressive win over Wigan.

This season has seen the Premier League become more competitive then ever; United have suffered five defeats, Chelsea have gone seven games without a win and the other two traditional big four teams Arsenal and Liverpool have had up-and-down seasons to date.

Sir Alex has said that even before the season, he identified Chelsea as their prime candidates to threaten United's recent dominance at the top of the Premier League and what he has seen to date has done nothing to change his mind.

"Nobody has had a consistent run really and although it is not looking like it at the moment, history tells you that two teams break away at the end," said Ferguson.

"Chelsea are the big danger because they too have great experience."

United have given their Dutch goalkeeper a period of indefinite compassionate leave as his wife suffered a brain haemorrhage just before Christmas.

The absence of the experienced man sees Tomasz Kuszczak and Ben Foster left to battle to keep net in United's upcoming games that could shape their Premier League title aspirations.

Vidic concentrating on United's title bid

Manchester United's Serbian defender Nemanja Vidic is concentrating on helping his side win the title rather than next summer's World Cup.

The towering centre half is expected to line up for his country in their games at the World Cup, where they will play in a group with Germany, Ghana and Australia, having missed the 2006 tournament due to injury.

Vidic is not planning on looking that far ahead and wants to concentrate all his hard work on helping Manchester United win another English Premier League title.

A disappointing 1-0 defeat at home to Aston Villa at the weekend meant they missed an opportunity to draw level with Premier League leaders Chelsea after they drew 3-3 with Everton earlier in the day.

That means United still sit three points behind their West London rivals and will be looking to get their title ambitions back on track against Wolves on Tuesday night.

"There is still so much time to the World Cup so for now I am concentrating on the big matches I have with Manchester United," said Vidic.

United veterans Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes are being offered new contracts at Old Trafford and the defender added that he thought the duo were playing well and remain a key part of the side.

Sir Alex Ferguson said his side were unlucky in the Villa game but remains confident United can still mount a serious title challenge as other teams at the top will all drop points before the end of the season.

EPL 2009-10: Liverpool - Arsenal goals

Liverpool take on Arsenal in what is an extremely important fixture in the calendar. It's not only that these two are the two teams from the big four but a lot is at stake for the both the teams. Arsenal, with no recognized striker would be looking to get maximum points from the match but Liverpool are the team who can cash in since their competitors for the top four spot like City and Spurs have dropped points. And with their team back in full fitness, they would not be satisfied with anything less than a win.

Rooney lavishes praise on team mates

Antonio Valencia and Ryan Giggs are playing pivotal roles in helping Manchester United win another Premier League title, according to Wayne Rooney.

The England striker spoke to MUTV after his side’s 4-1 win over Portsmouth on Saturday, a game in which Rooney grabbed himself a hat-trick, but it was the performance of 36-year-old Giggs which stole the headlines.

Rooney described his team mate as “amazing” and said it was a privilege to play with Giggs, who has played over 550 times for United and won 11 top division titles during his career.

"He plays more like a 26-year-old; he's up and down, he's everywhere. It's great for him to get his 100th Premier League goal. I didn't know (about the record) until after the game, but I'm delighted for him,” said Rooney.

The forward was also quick to praise the contribution which summer signing Valencia has made since arriving from Wigan.

He described the Ecuadorian international as a big, strong and quick player who is looking a real threat as United seek glory in both the Premier League and Champions League.

Manchester United are currently sat second in the Premier League, five points behind leaders Chelsea, and travel to East London for a game against West Ham next weekend.

Before that, they have a home Carling Cup quarter-final tie against Tottenham on Tuesday night.

Wayne focusing mind and body on title challenge

Wayne Rooney has vowed to do everything he can to help Manchester United upset the Premier League football odds and win the title this season.

The English striker has recently been celebrating the birth of his first child, named Kai Wayne, but is not looking for his new off-the-field responsibilities to affect his performances for the Old Trafford faithful.

Manchester United currently sit in third place in the Premier League, five points behind title front-runners Chelsea following the West London side's 1-0 victory over the Red Devils in the last round of league games.

The team will be looking to put their Premier League title ambitions back on track this coming weekend when they host Everton at Old Trafford and Rooney is not considering asking for a rest from that game.

Rooney admits that United have to “try even harder” following the defeat to their title rivals but he is not looking to preserve energy and will give everything he has to help his side.

"I am sure there will be games when I will have the chance to be rested,” said the English striker.

"I would prefer to play but if the manager decides to rest me, it is his decision."

One player who also aspires to do more to help United’s title charge is goalkeeper Ben Foster.

The England stopper has admitted it is hard to knock Edwin van der Sar out of the number one jersey and he is feeling disheartened with life currently at Old Trafford, although he is not planning on leaving the reigning Premier League champions.

Owen focused on United success

Manchester United’s bid for glory both domestically and in Europe could hinge on Michael Owen getting his mind focused on the job in hand.

The former Liverpool, Real Madrid and Newcastle striker has revealed that he is concentrating on his games coming up for United rather than losing any sleep over the ongoing debate as to whether he should be included in Fabio Capello’s World Cup squad.

Owen has won 89 caps to date for his country and scored 40 goals, which sees him sat fourth in the top England goalscorers list, only nine behind record holder and Old Trafford legend Bobby Charlton.

Whether or not Owen should still play for his country has been a continued point of debate for the media and football fans ever since the Italian took over as England coach. However, the player himself is refusing to get involved in the issue.

He has stated that he prefers to think about his current role at Old Trafford and the job he needs to do for the Red Devils to help fire them to both Premier League and Champions League glory.

“I genuinely go to bed thinking that I have got to play well the next day and win games for United. I don't think if I score or play well that I might get picked for England,” said Owen.

"First things first and the rest will take care of itself."

Manchester United have a crunch game in the next round of Premier League matches as they travel to Stamford Bridge to take on leaders Chelsea.

They currently sit two points behind their West London rivals and can replace Chelsea at the top of the table if they upset the Premier League odds and are victorious on Sunday afternoon.

EPL 2009-10: Manutd - Birmingham City goals

Champions Manchester United kick off their English Premier League campaign 2009-1o against newly promoted Birmingham City at Old Trafford. The Red Devils are on a mission to win their 12th Premier League crown and 19th title overall. And it was Wayne Rooney who gave the champions their first goal of the season when he tapped in after his header rebounded off the post. It was Rooney's 99th goal for Manchester United. And just at the stroke of half time, Fletcher missed a sitter. United were unable to create any clear cut chances in the second half. Ben Foster was required to make a good save from Cristian Benitez and Michael Owen came on for his maiden premier league appearance with United and he had the chance to score in the last minute when Rooney sent him clear but his shot was saved off Hart. All in all, it was a satisfactory night for the champions as they had dropped points in their opening game in the last two seasons.
