World
number one, Rory McIlroy, could begin the Ryder Cup $10m richer if he can win
the FedEx Cup at the Tour Championship at East Lake, after another sensational
victory for the current king of the course.
The
Northern Irishman made it three wins from his last four starts by securing a
two-shot victory at the BMW Championship at Crooked Stick, making it
back-to-back wins in the FedEx Cup play-offs.
The
23-year old will now head to East Lake as the overwhelming favourite at to pick up the $10m
jackpot that comes with winning the FedEx Cup – which would be a massive boost
to Europe’s main man ahead of this month’s Ryder Cup.
An
at times difficult season has really hit full speed now, with last month’s PGA
Championship success at Kiawah Island securing McIlroy’s second Major title to
add to his US Open victory from last year.
The
two-time Major winner certainly sounds like a man full of self-belief and
confidence in his game.
“I’m
getting to that stage where I’m thinking, ‘this is what I should be doing. I
should be lifting a trophy at the end of the week.’
“Every
time you put yourself in these positions and you end up winning, it just gets
put in the memory bank and it’s great to draw on if you ever need it.”
Now
a bone-fide golfing superstar, McIlroy is living up to all the hype that has
surrounded him for much of the past couple of years, producing his best form at
the big events.
The
European team and fans will certainly be hoping that continues at the Medinah
Club later this month.
In
his younger days, McIlroy claimed he did not feel the Ryder Cup was that big of
a deal. That view changed when he made his debut in Europe’s stunning victory
in 2010, and there is no doubt that McIlroy will be fired up for this year’s
tournament.
