The England cricket team suffered a shock defeat to Ireland in a World Cup fixture in Bangalore.
The England team had posted a reasonable of 327 for 8 wickets as they batted first leaving the Irish with a difficult task to claim victory. However, the highly rated Kevin O’Brien hit the fastest century in Cricket World Cup history to help the Ireland team to a famous win. O’Brien eventually hit a superb 113 off 63 balls and the Irish reached their target with five balls to spare.
England had started well with fifties from Kevin Pietersen, Jonathan Trott and Ian Bell but O’Brien was the hero of the day. The 26-year-old had never made a fifty in nine previous World Cup innings but helped power Ireland to the highest successful run chase in the tournament’s history.
O’Brien was run out in the penultimate over but the Irish tail enders held their nerve and saw out the match with almost an over to spare.
The defeat leaves England in third place in their qualifying table following a draw with India and a win over the Netherlands. With the next match against South Africa, England will need to considerably improve their performances if they are to qualify for the next round of the Cup.
