Gavin
Rees has made it clear he is fully focused on winning a second world title
following an impressive second defence of his European lightweight belt in Paris
The
Welshman travelled to the French capital to take on Anthony Mezaache to defend
his belt, claiming an impressive victory and gaining plenty of plaudits as a
result. Despite being the away fighter and having the boxing odds against him Rees never looked in any real danger,
producing one of the most complete performances of his career to take his
record to 36-1-1.
Rees
could now be set for another chance at world honours, with a potential bout
against WBO champion Ricky Burns being mentioned in what would be an intriguing
all-British encounter. The decision on who the 31-year old faces next will come
down to promoter Eddie Hearn, who is certainly one of the best in the business
at getting the fights the public want.
Rees,
meanwhile, was just pleased with how he performed against a tough Mezaache,
admitting he now wanted to step back up to world level.
“I mixed my tactics
up, fighting nice on the outside and catching him with some big right hands.”
“I’d worked on the
gym more with the boxing, he was a good opponent but I won every round.”
“I always seem to dig
in when the going gets tough and I want to be world champion again.”
