Rooney punishment backfires on Sir Alex!

After Manchester United lost to Blackburn Rovers yesterday against Stanjames betting odds, they missed the chance to go 3 points clear of rivals Manchester City who today lost their game with Sunderland who scored with the last kick of the game. It was a goal that wold have reaped great rewards with a bwin free bet.

One thing of surprise yesterday was the team selection of Sir Alex Ferguson who didn't include Wayne Rooney or Johnny Evans in the squad despite being short of central defenders.

Ferguson explained to the media that Rooney was suffering from a few strains which is why he wasn't involved in the game, but has today been reported that Rooney, Evans and Darren Gibson were all left out of the squad as punishment for breaking a club curfew after they went out for a meal with their wives and girlfriends after their Boxing Day win against Wigan.

According to Sky Sports reports, the three were made to do extra training by Sir Alex who was not best pleased with them going out against his will and 5 days later he left them out of his team.

Had Manchester United have won the game then now questions would have been asked, but as they lost the game 2-3 to bottom of the table Blackburn Rovers, and missed the chance to 3 points clear in the table, perhaps it wasn't such a wise move to leave out a key defender and the clubs talisman for what seems like a minor mistake that was made.

The three were not at a bar or even drinking, and simply had a sit down meal with their families, to be left out of such a crucial game seems a little harsh, and this harshness could come back to haunt Sir Alex at the end of the season.

It will be interesting to see if Sir Alex comments any further to bring clarity to the situation although I'm pretty sure that he will deny the reports, and of course the great man wont admit that he might just have got this one wrong!
